I want to think this film will be Illumination's finest. I can't get on with the majority of their work, but if they can pull off a blinder here that'd make me forgive the mediocrity of their past works.
-
Nintendo definitely closely supervised this. The lighting and motion has the "Nintendo flavour". The voices of Bowser, Toad, and Kamek match their game personalities wonderfully.
Mario himself is the only issue so far. The other characters look and sound 'gamey' (Luigi included, what little we saw/heard), but he comes across as a little too human. I worry there may be some contrived emotion incoming.
-
Why is he not trying to do the Mario voice? And please, please don't tell me it's because it's someone today thinks it may be offensive.
-
@sheria he sounds alot more like the Mario from the Super Mario bros Supershow cartoon back in the 90's when Mario was still decpicted as a plumber from Brooklyn rather than as the italian Charles Martinet Portray's as.
so i'm actually not finding Chris Pratt's voice for Mario that bad at all tbh

I don't mind it, I was just kinda expecting an attempt at the traditional Mario voice. I then got that sinking feeling that some idiot out there probably thinks it's a harmful stereotype or some such nonsense. I googled it after though and got hit by some kind of minefield about Pratt himself, the voice, him getting that role etc. I'm not getting into any of that, he seems ok to me.
-
@yoshi Is Mario not from Brooklyn?
-
@neocweeny he's from the Bronx
-
@dmcmaster My childhood is destroyed.
-
Liked everything about it. I'm probably going to watch it.
-
-
Still not entirely sold on Pratt, but I'll give it a shot. Looks like a fun day at the movies at least.
-
Yeah it looked real fun to me. Luigi steals the show for me, Charlie Day seems absolutely perfect as him lol
-
Not super into it tbh. It kinda shares a tone with every other kids animation nowadays. I guess I expected a Mario film to be a bit outside the norm. LEGO Movie was an example of having a similar sense of humour as it's contemporaries while still feeling pretty unique in its plot, action, and style.
Idk... this just looks like another movie to me. Also, Mario's voice... this ain't it b

@dipset
Could just be part of the marketing, I remember the Lego Movie trailers looking fairly generic. Guess time will tell.
-
all the people getting mad about chris pratt clearly never lived through the 90's or bothered to ever watch the Super Mario Bros Super Show

@yoshi Lou Albano was a treasure, and I won't hear otherwise.
-
@mbun
Any who insult Captain Lou Albano will meet with a terrible fate.
-
I wasn't insulting Lou. Chris Pratt literally sounds similar to him.
They are going with the whole plumber from brooklyn theme after all
-
@yoshi I don't think they sound alike at all.
